GUHSD’s Portrait of a Graduate: Shaping the Future Together

Grossmont Union High School District (GUHSD) is taking bold steps to prepare students for a rapidly changing world through the Portrait of a Graduate process—a community-driven effort to define the knowledge, skills, and attributes every GUHSD graduate should have to thrive in the future.

Launched in September 2024, this visionary initiative will conclude in February 2026, resulting in three guiding “portraits”: a Portrait of a Graduate, an Adult Portrait, and a System Portrait. These will serve as GUHSD’s “North Star,” shaping instruction, staffing, and financial decisions for years to come.

GUHSD has already conducted hundreds of forums with students, staff, and community members to gather input on the skills and qualities future graduates will need for success. This extensive collaboration has generated over 51,000 data points so far, which were carefully analyzed during two Guiding Coalition gatherings to inform the first drafts of the portraits.

It has been an honor for East County Schools Federal Credit Union to participate in this process—from attending the Guiding Coalitions to donating raffle items for attendees. We are proud to stand alongside the district and community as partners in shaping this important vision for the future of education.

This work reflects a deep commitment to the district’s mission. A special thank-you goes to Dr. Kirsten Vital Brulte, GUHSD’s new Superintendent, and the dedicated GUHSD Core Team, who meet weekly to ensure the process remains inclusive, thoughtful, and forward-thinking. Gratitude is also extended to the San Diego County Office of Education (SDCOE) for their expert guidance and facilitation throughout this journey.

Why does this matter? The world of work is evolving rapidly—new careers will emerge, and current roles will require new skill sets. By engaging our entire community in analysis, reflection, and planning, GUHSD is ensuring that students are not only prepared for graduation but for success in life.

Stay tuned as this exciting process continues to unfold, shaping a brighter future for all GUHSD students.

What mattered to me, was that I needed the money to buy a motorhome, and I needed it now. This is the fastest I've ever experienced for a loan. It's never been this easy or this pleasant and I could tell that this was simply the way ECSFCU serves all of their members; it's their culture. I wasn't a member when I started, but I am now.
