Summer Cybersecurity Tips to Keep Your Vacation Safe and Stress-Free

Because identity theft shouldn’t be part of your travel itinerary.
Whether you're planning to relax on a beach, road trip across states, or explore a new city, there's one thing you don’t want joining your travel plans: a cyber cybercriminal.
At East County Schools Federal Credit Union (ECSFCU), we’re committed to keeping your financial information safe year-round, but travel season can come with extra risks. That’s why we’re sharing five smart and simple tips to help protect your information while you enjoy your well-earned getaway.
1. Make digital and paper copies of key travel documents
Before you head out, make copies of your passport, travel itinerary, credit/debit cards, and health insurance information. Leave a copy with someone you trust and email digital versions to yourself for easy access if something goes missing. If you’re heading overseas, this can be a lifesaver.
2. Keep your travel plans off social media (for now!)
We get it — it’s tempting to share that airport selfie or beachside cocktail pic. But posting your real-time location can make you an easy target for burglars or scammers. Wait until you're home to share your favorite memories. And never post personal info like boarding passes or passport photos — they can be used to steal your identity.
3. Avoid using public Wi-Fi for anything financial
Public Wi-Fi (like the kind in airports, hotels, and cafés) is convenient, but it’s also a hotspot for hackers. Avoid logging into your ECSFCU accounts, checking balances, or making online purchases while connected to public networks. If you need to access sensitive info, use a secure connection or a trusted mobile data network.
4. Use a prepaid travel card to limit risk
Want an easy way to stick to your budget and add a layer of protection? Consider using a prepaid debit card just for travel. If it's ever lost or compromised, your personal accounts stay safe. ECSFCU members can ask us about options for secure, reloadable travel cards to take the worry out of spending abroad or on the go.
5. Do your research before you go
Whether you’re traveling across the country or around the world, take time to research your destination. Read hotel and neighborhood reviews, check safety tips, and make a list of local emergency contacts. If traveling internationally, download the Smart Traveler app from the U.S. State Department and enroll in the STEP program to get real-time safety alerts from the nearest U.S. embassy.
Wherever summer takes you, we’ve got your back.
Your safety — both financial and personal — matters to us. If you ever suspect fraud or need help while traveling, contact ECSFCU right away. And most importantly, enjoy your adventure!
Safe travels from all of us at East County Schools Federal Credit Union!
