Top 5 Tips to Avoid Holiday Scams

The holidays are a time for giving—but unfortunately, they’re also prime time for scammers. With online shopping, charity donations, and travel plans in full swing, fraudsters see an opportunity to strike. At East County Schools Federal Credit Union, we want to help you enjoy the season without falling victim to scams. Here are a few simple tips to keep your holidays merry and secure:

1. Watch Out for Fake Online Stores

If a deal looks too good to be true, it probably is. Scammers create fake websites with prices that seem unbeatable. Before making a purchase:

  • Check for “https://” and a padlock in the address bar
  • Read reviews from trusted sources
  • Avoid websites with spelling errors or poor design

2. Beware of Package Delivery Scams

Got an email or text saying your package can’t be delivered? Be cautious! Scammers use fake shipping alerts to steal personal info.

  • Don’t click on links in unsolicited messages
  • Track packages through the official carrier’s website or app

3. Verify Charities Before Donating

The season of giving is also a season for fake charity scams.

  • Research charities at CharityNavigator.org or BBB Wise Giving Alliance
  • Avoid donating via gift cards, wire transfers, or cash apps

4. Use Secure Payment Methods

When shopping online:

  • Use a credit card (offers better fraud protection than debit)
  • Enable alerts on your ECSFCU account for unusual activity
  • Never save card details on unfamiliar websites

5. Stay Alert for Phishing Emails

Scammers send emails that look like they’re from retailers or delivery services.

  • Look for misspellings, strange email addresses, and urgent language
  • When in doubt, go directly to the retailer’s official site instead of clicking links

Enjoy the Holidays Safely

A little caution goes a long way. If you notice suspicious activity on your ECSFCU account, call or text us right away at (619) 588-1515. For more tips, visit EastCountySchools.org/blog.
